Discussion:
OT: iTunes users, how do you get iTunes to reimport files?

I started using iTunes a few weeks ago to load MP3s onto my iPods. My
MP3 library is transcoded from my main FLAC library that I use with
Squeezebox.

At the time I set up iTunes, I pointed it at my MP3 library, let it
import everything, and it works well. But since then I've added albums,
changed a lot of the MP3 tags, and I've also embedded cover art into
most of the MP3 files. But iTunes hasn't picked up all of the changes.
How do you force iTunes to just reimport everything?

BTW, another question: iTunes didn't appear to recognize 'cover.jpg'
files in the same folder as the MP3s. This is why I embedded all of the
covers in the files, which I generally don't like doing. Is there some
way to get iTunes to use separate image files? Different file name
maybe, or some option setting?

This works fine with me, with the latest iTunes. Your mileage may
significantly vary, as it is not guaranteed to work with newer
versions.

1) Bring up ALL songs in list view
2) Edit =>Select All => Delete...But do NOT move files to recycle Bin!
This will clear the itunes library of references to song files.
3) Re-import your collection

If, at any time, you've added new folders of music to your collection ,
you can (in itunes) use 'File => Add Folder to Library' to import the
songs in that folder only, without affecting the rest of your itunes
references.

BTW, If you re-import w/o deleting, you'll get duplicate references to
your songs...a big headache. YMMV.

I also use iTunes Library Updater (iTLU v1.2.2.0) and am very happy with
the results. My files are stored on a ReadyNAS Duo and my iTunes
Library is locally stored on my laptop. I only use iTunes for loading
the iPod. Otherwise I work with the files directly on the NAS and
listen to them with the Squeezebox. After a busy period of adding files
or editing tags, I use iTLU to refresh the iTunes library. With 30,000+
tracks, it's much faster than deleting the iTunes database and
recreating it.
